I had intended to go to some museums in Sault Ste Marie but video poker kept calling me at the times I wanted to go so didn’t make them. I’d image that by 5 PM, there were some very happy people because beer was flowing at $5 a pitcher. There is a bank of 7 nickel video poker machines with lower payoffs that hover around 97 or 98 percent and we both spent some time there. It was a polka band – Richie Yurkovich and Polkarioty – that attracts an enthusiastic older crowd. I usually mix my play between video poker and some blackjack, but this time I was content with the video poker. Had lunch at Soaring Eagle while going through Mt. Perhaps next time. We listened for a bit but were too timid to get on the dance floor.
I headed for that machine Wednesday morning but got there too late. (I got the picture from a video I took and the video play controls are at the bottom of the picture – sorry.)
Additionally, there was a once a month activity in the Conference Center that I like to at least stick my head into. Most of the attractions that I wanted to see were closed for the winter months (they open up later this month). They have a bar that has 25 cent full pay jacks or better and the wife spent most of her gambling time there. They appeared from 1 to 5. Hm-m-m, maybe I’ll get back again this summer.
They had a Player’s Club sponsored slot tournament on Wednesday that we played in. As normal we didn’t do very well, but I was lucky at one session and wound up in 7th place which was good for $25 free play which I put to good use at video poker.
Coming Home and some comments
After a leisurely breakfast we packed up our stuff and got on the road about 10. I played for several hours on Tuesday. The wife, as usual, did better than I and was at or near even. We probably won’t get back up there this year and hope they don’t change Sacys menu too much before we do.. I think that a “team of two” was playing because either that initial person or another fellow that I recognized was playing every time I went by. Pleasant and were home by 3.
Although it wasn’t quite this crowded when we were there, lots of people were around. Someone had begun playing. Ran into some rain after crossing the bridge but it quit pretty quickly. I checked it over a period of about 12 hours and one or the other of them was there all the time.
Video poker was about what should be expected since I didn’t get a royal and I wound up putting about $4,000 through the machines and lost $45. I had more points accumulated than the wife so I got more entries. The machine that caught my eye, however, and I sat there immediately was a Quick Quad machine. My best (and most fun) hand came when it dealt me three 6′s, a five, and an ace for a dealt Quick Quads
Seba explained that it all starts with each oddsmaker creating a line on each game based upon their own personal approach. Reasons for such adjustments include:
Once a game’s power rating based pointspread is determined, the oddsmaker will make adjustments to that line after considering each team’s most recent games played and previous games played against that opponent.
How the Opening Line Is Made
For example, if the pointspread on a game is 7 and most of the money is coming in on the underdog (taking the +7), sportsbooks will then move the number down to 6 ½ to try and attract money on the favorite. If we’ve done that, we’ve done our job.”
The opening line is the first line created by the oddsmakers, which is then sent out to sportsbooks. This usually includes having up-to-date power ratings on each team. What Is the Line Trying to Accomplish?
The last step in the line-making process for each oddsmaker is taking one final look to determine whether or not the line “feels right.” This is where common sense and past experience with how games are bet enters into the picture. Each of these oddsmakers bring unique opinions, strengths and weaknesses to the process. “We’re not trying to pick the team that covers the spread, we’re trying to make it a coin flip, a tough decision (for the bettor).
Once betting begins, sportsbooks can adjust the line at any time. Examples of non-game factors that would require an adjustment to a team’s power rating are key player injuries and player trades. People think it’s much more complicated, but it’s not.”
Once the opening line is released by LVSC, the individual sportsbooks decide if they want to make any adjustments before offering it to the public. The power ratings are adjusted after each game a team plays. Also, adjustments are made after reading each team’s local newspapers to get a sense of what the coaches & players are thinking going into the game.
The purpose of these adjustments, like all line adjustments, is to more equally divide the betting action. Of course there is an entire method to the madness on how the opening line is created. We do this by drawing from past experiences and applying them to current situations. For example, the public might have heavy betting interest week after week on a popular college football team such as USC. Of the 4-5 oddsmakers, generally the 2 most respected opinions are weighed more heavily by the Odds Director before he decides on the final line.
Individual books having players who consistently bet with certain tendencies (such as an extreme bias toward favorites or toward a certain popular team like USC)
A round-table discussion among the 4-5 oddsmakers involved in making the line for each sport is then conducted and a consensus line is decided upon by the Odds Director before it is released to the sportsbooks.
Moving the line is the oddsmaker’s effort to balance betting action, and often times such moves can have a major impact on a bettor’s decision.
Oddsmakers can also change the line depending on various event-related factors such as player injuries or weather. In our extended interview, Seba explained that there are 4-5 oddsmakers assigned to make lines for each of the major sports (pro & college football and basketball; MLB, NHL, boxing, golf).
There is a common misconception that point spreads represent the oddsmakers’ prediction of how many points the favorite will win by. That is not the case at all – their intent is NOT to evenly split the ATS result between the teams; rather, their goal is to attract equal betting action on both sides.
“The #1 thing for us is to make a line for each game that creates good two-way action.
“You either have a passion for it or you don’t,” Seba said.
“The main objective is that our clients get equal action on both sides,” Seba said. Mike Seba is a Senior Oddsmaker at LVSC and has been making lines for the last six years. Oddsmakers have to determine if any changes are necessary and send out an “adjusted line.”
Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC) is the world’s premier oddsmaking company and the most respected authority on making the lines. By necessity their approach is very research-oriented and concise, since with millions of dollars at risk there is little margin for error. Stated another way, they want to create a line that half the people find appealing to bet one way while the other half find it appealing to bet the other way (known as ‘dividing the action’).
Experts working for the individual books having a strong opinion on the game
Why the Line Changes
Power ratings are the oddsmaker’s value of each team and are used as a guide to calculate a “preliminary” pointspread on an upcoming game. Obviously, if the line comes out a week ahead of the event (which is the case in football), there is much that could happen during the week leading up to the event that could affect the line. If an oddsmaker comes up with a preliminary line of USC -7, then an adjustment up to -7.5 or -8 would be made in response to the public’s expected USC bias.
Oddsmakers at LVSC are professional sports junkies who love what they do and would probably do it for nothing if you asked them, but they do get paid for it. In doing so they attempt to make more attractive the team that is getting less action.
Since the oddsmaker’s ultimate goal is equally dividing the betting action, public perception and betting patterns must be taken into account.
Divided action means the sportsbook is guaranteed a profit on the game because of the fee charged to the bettor (called juice or vig – typically $11 bet to win $10). By moving the line, sportsbooks can influence how the public bets on a particular game

Some other variables, such as the weather conditions, the team morale, players’ personal life events or recent injured players are also taken into account when setting the lines.
In football for example there are many leagues in which you can decide to bet. Therefore, before rushing directly into placing a random bet, the first thing you should do is to get acquainted with the meaning of an odd and the three types of lines used in betting: fractional, decimal and American. The highest Conference betting odds can go from 6 to 261 for the participating teams.
There are three types of odds: decimal, fractional and American. They are also referred to as lines and they are set by bookmakers. Only knowledge will transform you from an idle better to a winner. This type of odds is also the most popular and it is offered by many bookmakers. Their names describe the way the odds are written by the bookies. Only in England there are 8 different leagues. In football, there are many leagues in which you can place a bet. Everything becomes much easier once you know the basics. After all, the reputation of a bookie stands in its ability to set the odds accurately. Fractional odds will say how much profit will be gained by the punter from one unit. This statistic process is a matter of intense research and years of experience. In UK however, the most commonly used type of odds are the decimal ones. Before figuring out the mathematical likelihood of defeat, victory or draw of a sports team, the odds makers are considering a wide range of variables. For Conference betting for example you will most probably receive the odds expressed in fractions. No matter if it is Championship, Premier League, FA Cup, League 1, League 2, Capital One Cup, Community Shield or Conference betting, it is important for you to know how to read the odds and find the bookie that provides the best lines available.
. Of course, one of the most important is the team’s performance during this season, as well as in past sessions. Golf betting can work with decimal odds as well. Decimal odds are usually stating exactly how much money will be gained by a punter from betting one unit. American odds tell the positive or negative outcome of a bet at a 100 unit stake.
Odds are an interpretation of the chance that a certain outcome will take place during an event. The home field advantage can also be influencing the odds. Golf betting is completely different from football betting for example. The difference from this kind of odds and the decimal ones stands in the meaning expressed by the odds. Every sport has a particular betting system.
It is critical to understand betting odds if you want to play them correctly and become a real sports investor

A few of the common roulette myths that should be ignored are as follows:
R-Bet Winning Roulette Software – A large number of customers are satisfied with this roulette system. However, it is one of the most common roulette myths that are widely rumored. As a result, the players have started believing in myths which supposedly affect their chances to make profits at roulette. European wheel has 37 slots and not 38, which means the house advantage will be only 2.70%, whereas on American wheel the house advantage would be 5.25% on every bet. The rules, the odds and the house-edge are same for both the European wheel and American wheel. The truth is that, the odds remain 50%-50% and it will be similar even if the ball would fall on red 30 times.. These numbers start from the 0 (zero) and end with 36 or 37. It is basically a particular type of table game and a large number of players can play the game at a time. Roulette basically consists of a spinning wheel and a series of number. It is said that over time many roulette players have found that if the ball lands 10 times consecutively on red, there is a high chance that the ball will land on black in the next turn. It is true that the European wheel is the best for playing, because comparing with the American wheel the odds of success for a player in the former one are better. According to the users, these roulette systems are partly effective. This is also a wrong concept. As 2 distinct kinds of wheels are available at the casinos, the last number depends on which kind of the wheel it is. Some of the reputed roulette systems are listed below:
All roulette wheels are same: Many roulette players around the world heartily believe that, the roulette wheel is not of 2 types. The R-Bet roulette software has proved its capability and credibility.
The Sure Roulette Method – This particular roulette system is one of the most popular and oldest systems around. Due to the rising popularity of the roulette, various myths are being associated with it. The players do not need to be skilled enough to play roulette. The European wheel has numbers from 0 to 36. With the help of this roulette system, you can make substantial profits for several times at the roulette table. It is known as one of the simplest as well as most exciting games found in the casinos worldwide. Roulette is completely a game of chance. This is absolutely wrong. On the other hand, the wheel consisting of the numbers from 0 to 37 along with an extra 0 is the American wheel. The system is described in an e-book, which is good to read, but the system lacks some finer tweaking, to make it as profitable as other gambling systems available on the net.
Though roulette is a game of chance, several fake roulette softwares, claiming the sure-shot success in the game are found in the market today. So it is better to get the odds in your favor from the very beginning, by playing on the European wheels.
Every roulette wheel spin is not random: It is a common belief that, in roulette one spin invariably affects its consecutive spins
It grows throughout its life and needs to be clipped regularly so that it does not cause discomfort to the horse. The horse industry provides around 5 lac full-time job opportunities, with almost 8 lac employees (full-time and part-time). Rather, they sleep sporadically throughout the day in 10 – 15 minute spells.
The horse industry is very important in America for various reasons. The first species is extinct, while the second is a rare species.
? Old Billy was the oldest recorded horse who lived to the ripe old age of 62!
? Falabella of Argentina, is the smallest breed of horses. They are adorable creatures and should be taken care of, as they deserve it.
? First off, let’s see the terminology associated with the horse:Foal – Male or female horse less than 1 year old.
Yearling – Male or female horse between 1 and 2 years old.
Colt & Filly – Colt is a male horse between 2 and 4 years old, while a filly is a female horse between 2 and 4 years old.
Mare – A female horse older than 4 years.
Gelding & Stallion – Gelding is a castrated male horse older than 4 years, while a stallion is a non-castrated male horse older than 4 years.
? A horse is a member of the “equus” family. If you are in a bad mood, your horse may act out, but if you are in a good mood your horse will be well-behaved and easy to work with.
? A year is added to a horse’s birthday on January 1st (Northern Hemisphere) and on August 1st (southern hemisphere) irrespective of their actual birth date. A farrier or blacksmith is the person who cares for a horse’s feet.
? Horses use their facial expressions to communicate. They are Tarpan Horse and Przewalski’s Horse.
? Foals have milk teeth, just like human babies. Their moods can be determined with the help of their nostrils, eyes and ears.
? If you hold your hand out to a horse and it approaches you, while then blowing warm air onto the palm of your hand, it means that he/she wants to be friends with you. It is called Equinophobia.
? The hoof of a horse is like a fingernail. Equus caballus, is a term given to modern-day horses. The leading cause of death in horses is reported to be colic.
? A horse’s head weighs 11.84 pounds on an average, while its heart can weigh an amazing 10 pounds.
? A horse’s mood usually mirrors the emotions of its owner.
In the beginning, horses were wild animals. Ponies live longer than horses.
? Horses, zebras and donkeys belong to the same genus, and hence can breed with one another! A cross between a horse and a zebra, is known as a zebroid, or zorse. This word originates from the Greek dialect, and means ‘quickness’. So if a horse measures 16 hands, it is 16×4 which is 64 inches tall.
? A horse has two blind spots.
? Little Pumpkin is the smallest pony in history – it stood high at 14 inches and weighed 20 lbs.
? Horses can sleep lying down as well as standing up. The goods and services of the horse industry amount to around $40 billion and its impact on the U.S. It had 4-toed front feet and 3-toed hind feet, and resembled a fox more than the horse of today.
The prehistoric horse, Hyracotherium, went through innumerable transformations over millions of years to become the modern one-toed horse. A horse’s teeth can give a good estimate of its age!
? In most cases, the foal (young horse) is born at night, away from danger and prying eyes.
Did You Know..?Hyracotherium was one of the first horses that lived about 50 million years ago. Their actual birth date is considered only when they are going to be used for endurance riding.
Here are some more interesting facts about these beautiful creatures… GDP is more than a 100 billion US dollars! In terms of taxes, the horse industry pays almost $2 billion to the government! In a nutshell, horses are important – for various reasons. Around 3500 B.C., things changed and people began taming horses and using them to carry things, instead of only hunting them for meat.
? Horses usually live for around 25 to 35 years. To be more specific, the offspring of a stallion and female donkey is a hinny, while the offspring of a mare and male donkey is a jack. According to a study by Deloitte Consulting LLP for the American Horse Council Foundation done in 2005, 2 million Americans own a horse. Some of them live for 40 years or more but these cases are not very common. At around age 3, these start getting replaced by permanent teeth. If it rests its head on your shoulder, it means that he/she trusts you.
? Of all land-dwelling mammals, horses have the largest eyes, and since they are located on either side of its head, they have almost 360º vision! They can see different things with each eye!
? Horses cannot sleep more than 3 hours per day. ? Horses cannot vomit, and hence digestion problems could be fatal to a horse. They sleep only 3 – 4 hours per day!
? There are more than 350 breeds of horses in the world!
Interesting Facts About Horses. Even the three hours of sleep is not taken at a stretch. They do not grow more than 30 inches in height.
? Within a couple of hours after being born, a foal can stand and walk!
? A fully grown 1000 lb horse will eat anywhere between 16 – 26 lb of food, and drink 10 – 12 gal of water!
? Some people have a fear of horses. About 4.6 million people are a part of the horse industry (includes owners, full-time and part-time employees, service providers, and volunteers).
? Poe, a horse who lives in Ontario, Canada, is reported to be the tallest horse, measuring 20.2h at the withers! He stands almost 10 feet tall when he’s holding his head high!
? Only two subspecies of horses have never been domesticated. One is located directly in front of them while the other is located directly behind.
By 3000 B.C., this majestic beast was completely tamed and domesticated, and now only 1 wild subspecies of horse exists, which too, has been declared “rare”. A cross between a donkey and zebra is known as a zedonk.
? A little about their head markings:
A narrow white mark, which runs down the face from the forehead, is called a Stripe.
A white mark, which covers one or both the lips and proceeds up to the nostrils, is called a White Muzzle.
A broad splash of white that covers most parts of the forehead between the eyes and carries, right down the nose to the muzzle is called a Blaze.
Any kind of mark, which appears on the forehead of a horse, is called a Star, irrespective of whether it resembles one.
? A horse has 4 gaits:Walk (2 beats) – The average walking speed of a horse is 4 – 5 miles per hour.
Trot/Jog (2 beats) – 8 – 12 miles per hour is the average speed at which a horse trots.
Lope/Canter (3 beats) – A horse can canter at an average of 12 – 16 miles per hour.
Gallop – Horses can gallop at 26 – 32 miles per hour.
Besides this, some horses have a varied gait referred to as ambling.
? The height of a horse is measured using the unit, “hand”, where one hand equals four inches

With Saratoga Looming, Something Old and Some New Things
HALLANDALE BEACH, July 17, 2016–From Southern California to the Jersey Shore, and from Kentucky and, as of this weekend, Indiana, all roads are lead to Saratoga for the most consequential summit among three-year-olds of both sexes this year.
The week after–if all goes well in the Haskell Invitational and Jim Dandy–a rematch of Triple Crown achievers Nyquist, Exaggerator and Creator would be extraordinary, a few talented new shooters sprinkled in for added interest.
With the addition of Florent Geroux and the strong riding of Joel Rosario in New York this year, the jockey battle, always of supreme interest in Saratoga, will be very highly contested. The industry did experiment, generating mixed results, with all-weather synthetic surfaces as a substitute for dirt. Brown’s legion of turf runners. However, as a trained scientist I found it disturbing that these surfaces were installed and used without any prior long-term studies of their health effects on the horses or the riders.
“It’s bad enough when the athletes’ lungs are exposed to the dust from the breakdown of dirt particles. Instead, step up and do something crazy; think outside the bottom line, about a long range plan that could work over time.
Here, then, Part 2 of Steven Roman’s long goodbye to the game…
Beyond this, the human races figure to be even more interesting. Carke in American Association Equine Practitioners 55:183-186, 2009 noted that although it appears synthetic surfaces are safer than dirt, when synthetic surfaces replaced turf courses, Fatal Musculoskeletal Injury (FMSI) rates increased, confirming turf as the safest type of surface. . will the racing industry finally act to reverse overall negative perceptions of the game, or is it already too late?
It’s in that spirit, in the hope that Roman’s long goodbye will resonate with a heretofore unknown guardian angel, one brilliant enough to invent a magic wand so big that it can be waved over 38 horse-racing states and the District of Columbia.
If all goes well for both, a rematch in the storied mile-and-a-quarter Alabama on August 20 is promised.
The following remarks are the thoughts of a man who at no time wanted to make racing a profession, but rather it remain an avocation, something to love, see it prosper and endure, enjoyed by a wider audience. This rivalry isn’t media-made; it’s real.
With Geroux, the country’s leaded graded-stakes rider, joining Rosario, Saratoga titlists Javier Castellano and Johnny Velazquez, the prodigious Ortiz brothers and the emerging Manny Franco, the jockey race will be lively and highly competitive; great for bettors.
“As an industry outsider I have no say in implementing change, but I can have an opinion. Interesting here will be the battles between Pletcher’s juveniles vs. With Chad Brown having an extraordinary Belmont meeting, you know perennial Saratoga leader Todd Pletcher wants to retain his title.
Of course, the results will depend on the quality mounts as most trainers have their “go-to” guys and barns can go hot or cold regardless of focus and intent. Steven A. F. In reality, synthetic surfaces are not the same as or even a close approximation to dirt. The desired result? No revenue loss from cancellations due to weather-related problems. A.
“If safety truly was the primary concern a safer surface, turf, already exists. The drainage characteristics of synthetic surfaces are supposed to keep them viable under virtually all weather conditions. How many others tethered to the horse can say the same with that qualifier?
“I personally believe the real motivation behind the introduction of synthetic surfaces was purely economic with increased safety a secondary consideration and good for public relations.
It begins next weekend when sensational Songbird, a filly that some, myself included, say is reminiscent of Ruffian, gets her first serious challenge when she meets Carina Mia in the Coaching Club American Oaks. Brown came close last year and with more talented dirt runners in the barn, this could be his year. An obvious step is the complete elimination of race day medication with severe penalties for violators, up to and including criminal prosecution or a lifetime ban depending on the severity of the infraction.
“Synthetic surfaces are formulated in different ways but generally consist of sand and polymeric materials in fiber form usually modified by the addition of rubber and wax.
And I still mean that and why I, personally, will not leave the game until someone pulls the remote out of one cold dead hand while I try to bet with the other. This protects not only the athletes but the interests of the horseplayers as well. Which other gambling outlet permits similar behavior? What would the penalty be if the ownership or staff of a Las Vegas casino was caught cheating? Would it be a slap on the wrist? I doubt it.
Five days and counting but, first, some unfinished business:
“Solutions cannot be achieved without difficulty because of the overriding economic interests of those within the industry, but there are things that can be done. Roman, creator of the Dosage Index algorithm that measures a sire’s pre-potency for passing on his distance racing capability to its offspring, I am not optimistic when it comes to racing’s future when measured against real-world materiality.
I’ve written this before but upon leaving the Gulfstream Park walking ring behind the Florida Derby horses this winter as a few thousand fans surveyed the scene, I turned to a track executive and said: “I feel sorry for all the people that don’t get it about Thoroughbred racing.”
All in racing who truly love it, and wish it would last forever, please don’t raise your hand. As the surface particles erode under continual exposure to mechanical effects (e.g., the pounding of horses’ hooves, harrowing, etc.) and environmental effects (e.g., heat, sunlight, wind, moisture, etc.) the dust and vapors created are inhaled by horse and rider. It’s far worse when they are exposed to dust and vapors from eroding synthetic materials and even natural materials that are potentially carcinogenic or may physically damage the respiratory system. The objective, short of eliminating the sport, is to minimize the likelihood of injury and death, accepting that riders have a choice but the horses do not. Weather will factor into this, of course.
“Improvement of the Breed” No Longer Applies to Thoroughbred Racing
Like the author of the following, Dr. Both will be going all-in.
“Another even less likely approach is a switch to racing exclusively on grass, a surface well documented to reduce (but unfortunately not eliminate) fatalities and which is the standard racing surface for most of the world. Not knowing the long-term effects should be completely unacceptable – but not, apparently, to those who control the game.
But what sense does it make to be a horseplayer or, for that matter, the owner of a well-bred two-year-old, if you can’t dream a little?
“There may have been marginal improvements in safety with synthetic surfaces, but that may be because they are inherently slower compared to dirt. And, presumably, although debatable, maintenance costs can be lower as well.
For Roman, his love of the game was enough to apply his science background to pedigree study, and he made a mark.
“I’ve never understood why any transgressions by trainers, owners, riders or veterinarians that could affect the outcome of a race and, consequently, the bankrolls of horseplayers are tolerated at all
